Mexico alone blocks over 1,000 daily attempts from predatory lending applications. Known locally as montadeudas, these have become one of the most pervasive digital threats in Latin America.
How It Works
Phase 1: The Trap
Victims encounter a legitimate-looking lending app that requests extensive permissions: contacts, photos, SMS, camera, location.
Phase 2: The Extortion
Interest rates from 200% to 3,000% are applied. Harassment includes mass contact notification, photo manipulation, device lockout, and physical threats.
Transnational Crime
Operations originate in Asia but are localized for Latin American markets.
The Human Cost
Victims report psychological distress, social isolation, and in tragic cases, suicide.
